Paintings
Presented as part of the Austin Studio Tour, stop #366. 11/16 and 11/17, noon til 6 each day. Vessels & Portals is a collection of work by Katie Cowden that explores symbols of transformation in the mediums of wood and acrylic paint. Vessels, spaces of holding, and portals, spaces of movement, both reveal depths and possibilities of self.
In my painting process, I start with sourcing wood bases from thrift stores and creative reuse centers. Many of them just need a little sanding and priming to be usable, and I get to source cheaper materials while keeping them out of the landfill. Similarly, many of the cut out shapes I use are made from wood I find in the scrap bin while lasercutting at MakeATX. This keeps my work fairly sustainable. The rest of the process is layers of acrylic paint applied with mostly very small brushes.
